John Romaniello (better known as Roman) runs Roman Fitness Systems with a tongue-in-cheek approach to fitness. Equal parts narcissism and self-loathing, Roman writes with passion and humor, show-casing his belief that training doesn’t need to be serious, stern, science-laden monotony. It can be fun, too.
Roman stopped by The Fat-Burning Man Show before going on other shows such as Dr Oz, The Colbert Show, and a few other stops in the mainstream media to talk about his new book, Man 2.0: Engineering the Alpha.
This is a fun show, but let’s put it this way: it’s a bit more “Tucker Max” than “Paul Jaminet.”
I already know this show is going to be controversial. If you’re offended by colorful language, what a male at 23 years old has to say about sex (or women in general), or a few other topics that might raise some eyebrows, you may want to skip to the next show.
That said, Roman is brutally honest about his transformation from a chubby kid to a model and unapologetically shares his physical, mental and emotional journey with all of us. It takes a great deal of courage, and gumption, to do that, so there’s a lot to learn from the show if you pay attention.
* If you are listening to the podcast, we’ve bleeped out the potty mouth words.
In today’s show we talk about:
- What it’s like to go from being a chubby kid to ripped
- The head trash that comes along with body transformation (that no one talks about)
- How you can dramatically improve your life while improving your body
- And why Tucker Max and Arnold Schwarzenegger say Roman’s book doesn’t suck.

That was a re-freshingly honest interview. Now if I can get my 18 year old daughter to listen to what Roman said about 23 year old men….ha ha. Actually this struck a cord with raising our kids…2 sons also. We’ve tried to teach them to get out there and experience life…find out what you like, what works, what is good for you but also what you don’t like, what doesn’t work, whats not good. All the best with the new book.

Awesome interview Able! I’ve been listening to the show for a long time and must say that although all are very entertaining, this one takes the paleo-cake. Probably because I am at the exact same age/stage as Roman and went through a lot of the stuff you guys talked about, but you were able to give me a whole new perspective on it. I’m stoked to read the book and keep up the great work!

Glad to hear it, Clay! 🙂

Abel – This interview really challenged me to shift my perspective. At first when listening to him, I felt like he was pretending to be some super hero muscle head jock, and somehow morally superior to all the other muscle head jocks out there. And then I started to really hear what he was saying. All those things that at first I thought he was being cocky about, just turned out to be confidence… And then I was all like, “Yeah man!! you’re awesome, be strong, be confident AND be a nice guy!”… If Roman can help young men to work towards a wonderful balance that it appears he has not only achieved, but also has a recipe for, my gosh!! Good on him. I’m looking forward to reading the book and maybe gifting it to a few freinds.

Thanks for your honest feedback, Jessika. Men of our generation can use as much help as we can get to figure out to be healthy and strong – mentally and physically.

I sure hope his fiancee has asked him to test for STDs (not being judgmental, just thinking about the consequences of having indiscriminate sex).
And by the way, not all 23-year old men are like that. Some actually marry and have have families by that age. I also noticed a lot of men underestimate women’s sex drive. I sure thought a lot about sex when I was 18!
That said, sounds like a fun guy to hang out with (as friends).
Abel James says
Good points – thanks for stopping by, Natalie!

This was a great interview. I was really glad to hear someone speak to the topic of “life after physical transformation”. As someone who went from fat to fit in their mid 30s, I can tell you that life changed noticeably for me… how I was perceived definitely changed. Some attention for the better, other attention not so much…
Great show, as always Abel. Love what you do – keep it up!

It really is amazing how your environment can completely change based upon your physical appearance, isn’t it? So glad you enjoyed the show! – Emily, FBM Team
