How prepared are you for a grid down scenario?
While grim estimates from the government estimate that up to 90% of the population could be wiped out after just one year without power, today’s remarkable guest has a much more optimistic view.
Today, I’m honored to be here with the one and only Mykel Hawke, a U.S. Special Forces Captain and Combat Veteran, TV Star, best-selling author and Outdoor Survival Expert.
You might recognize Mykel Hawke from a number of TV shows, including Man, Woman, Wild where he and his wife Ruth, work together to survive in legit life-threatening situations like raging backcountry firestorms or being lost at sea with limited to no supplies. Mykel and Ruth resort to eating reptiles, bugs and even rotting raccoons in precarious situations.
So if you want to conquer fear, be prepared for worst case scenarios and make survival preparedness fun for the whole family, this show is for you.
In this episode with Mykel Hawke, you’ll learn:
- Why Mykel resorts to eating rodents, reptiles and bugs in sketchy situations
- Simple methods to protect yourself against the real threats of the wild
- How to collect and sanitize water in an emergency
- How to make survival preparedness fun for kids
- The 8 pillars of survival
- How to face your fears from someone who’s been stalked by a jaguar through the Amazon jungle
- And tons more…

Mykel is also multilingual and a bestselling author of multiple books, including:
- Hawke’s Green Beret Survival Manual
- Family Survival Guide
- Hawke’s Special Forces Survival Handbook
- Foraging For Survival
- The Quick and Dirty Guide to Learning Languages Fast
- And more
Family Survival Guide is a fantastic book. I highly encourage you to pick up a copy.
And the Special Forces Survival Handbook is another incredible book, which I will be putting into my bug-out bag.
I’ve gone through so many survival books, I’m kind of a junky in just going through these, and the Special Forces Survival Handbook, Foraging for Survival, as well as Hawke’s Green Beret Survival Manual are favorites. Be sure to check those out.
Mykel: When the publishers came out with a skinnier book, they actually decided they didn’t need the fat book anymore, and the fat book–Hawke’s Green Beret Survival Manual–was actually going on the aftermarket for $2000 on Amazon. It’s like, what?
I realized it’s because that one talks about nuclear, biological, chemical wars. It talks about cannibalism and all those other things that most of the survival books out there don’t really talk about.
'Whatever you are afraid of, face it. And if you can cultivate that piece of character within you, then by God, you can do anything that you ever need to when it comes to survival.' -Mykel Hawke @mykelhawke Share on XSo I went to the publisher and said, “Hey, you might want to re-release this,” and so they did.
So that’s out there as well. And it’s cheaper now because it’s in a little like a pulp fiction kind of book. But it’s a really, really good book. But yeah, thank you for pointing those out.
My wife Alyson and I have been re-watching season 1 and 2 of Man, Woman, Wild, and it’s fantastic.
We don’t watch much TV, especially not anymore, but Man, Woman, Wild came out about the same time that I started this podcast a little more than 10 years ago, which is crazy to think about.
And of all the survival shows out there, I think Man, Woman, Wild is probably the best one. Especially because of the pairing of Mykel and Ruth, who are both brilliant and very effective, but also the interpersonal relationship dynamics are incredibly entertaining and informative.
We’ve really learned a lot from watching Mykel and Ruth. So we hope you enjoy.
'When you are truly in a survival situation, you do what you must, as long as you do so with honor, so that you can survive and return to your loved ones.' -Mykel Hawke @mykelhawke Share on XOnce more, it’s season 1 and 2 of Man, Woman, Wild on Discovery, and don’t forget to check out Mykel’s books as well.
Also, stay tuned for what’s coming next…
Mykel: I just did a big show for Discovery in India—India’s Ultimate Warrior—that will probably come to the States pretty soon. Really fantastic show about the true character and nature of a warrior. Not just being a big toughy, right?
And so I’m really proud of that show. It’s really honorable, really worthy, family-friendly.
Next show that’s coming out is going to be with Kelsey Grammer on Fox, I think that starts on May 1st, it’s called Historic American Battles.
And they interview me throughout the series as the Survival, Combat and Special Ops Expert, commenting on those significant wars, like the Revolutionary and Civil War in America. So that should be a really fun, interesting show.
We have some other things in the pipeline. We’re getting ready to come out with a new project called Survival Homes and Garden, which will be an online magazine, which will have a whole bunch of stuff for everybody, and I’m very excited about that.
And we’re working on some other little things like survival guns, survival boots and a survival kids cartoon, but we’ll save all that for when they’re ready. But that just is a little sneak preview.

Abel and I grabbed the DVDs of season 1 and 2 of “Man, Woman, Wild” and have been re-watching those. Wow, what a show. Mykel and Ruth are so entertaining and just really helpful in knowing what to do in a survival situation.
Mykel’s books are excellent. I definitely recommend picking up the Family Survival Guide and others.
I absolutely love this interview.
